Description
Finally! A set of bellringers you can customize to YOUR students. Use these with my digital interactive notebooks or simply with your students’ regular notebooks. In this download, you will find slides for 12 weeks following this pattern:
Mechanics Mondays
These slides present tasks to consolidate skills in spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Textual Tuesdays
On this day, students explore approaches to reading or writing, often including literary techniques.
Wordy Wednesdays
Focusing on vocabulary, students are encouraged to develop new techniques for expanding their word base and strengthening their understanding of how words ‘work’.
Thoughtful Thursdays
In this edition, Thursdays are set aside to reflect on a meaningful quote or ponder a moral dilemma. These can cause quite lively discussions and some great insights!
Film Friday
It’s the end of the week and time to kick back and watch a film to provoke new thinking. The short films in this section have been chosen for their depth, and potential for ‘digging deeper’.
WHY BELLRINGERS?
Bellringers can be used at any time during a lesson to refocus students, give them variety, fill extra time or round of a lesson. However, they are most commonly used as ‘starter’ activities and displayed as students enter a room. Bellringers are an ideal way to get learners ready for a class for various reasons including:
They get into the habit of getting down to work immediately, as the bellringers are always displayed as they enter the room;
By the time they have completed the bellringer, all the materials they need for the class should be to hand i.e. notebooks, pens etc;
By using timers, students focus on completing the given task in the time allocated so less time for chitchat and distraction;
The activities are short (no longer than 20 minutes) and can be followed by silent reading when completed.
WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT THESE BELLRINGERS?
These particular bellringers have been tested in classrooms from Grade 6 to Grade 10 (and some with Grades 11 and 12). Need a spelling variation for your location or want to personalise the slides with people from your school community? No problem! As these slides are editable, you are free to change whichever details you like.
I am used to teaching mixed-ability classes with LS and EAL students – I have high expectations for all learners I work with, from those who are below to those who are above grade level.
