Welcome, I’m Abena

I’m so glad you’re with us!

I'm guessing you're here because...

…you value diversity!

You realise that we’ll have a better world when we learn to accept people (including ourselves!) as they are. You understand that identity is both visible and invisible.

You appreciate people who are real, vulnerable, and honest – people who can admit they don’t know it all but are willing to learn.

You know culturally-responsive classrooms are not just an ideal – that we can make this a reality through actionable steps.

You know that – regardless of our backgrounds and experiences – we all can improve our practice. We are, all of us, committed educators at different points on this journey.

You know how essential it is to make every single student feel included and valued in your classroom and care.

You want allies on your journey – I’m here to offer my support and connection.

Who Am I?

I grew up in Ireland with an Irish Mum and a Ghanaian dad. I’ve been teaching for over 20 years (where did the time go?!) in Europe and beyond.

These days, you’ll find me in Southeast Asia teaching in an international school. I live with my husband, 3 energetic, unique kids, and a very teeny rescued chihuahua called Ollie.

I moved out of my comfort zone of remaining anonymous online because I’m committed to helping teachers like you create culturally-responsive classrooms. Why? Because I know first-hand what it’s like to be a student in an environment that ignores the unique parts of my identity. I also know how rewarding it can be to help students find pride in their sense of self.

I created this site to build a community so we can all learn from each other. The challenges of creating a culturally-sustaining classroom are real! We may face pushback, lack of resources, and other obstacles. I’m here to ensure we never feel alone on our journey. Join me!
