It’s a great approach for visible thinking, metacognition and discussion. These are great for a first-day activity where students’ names are on the hexagons and they have to find out how they are connected to others in their group.

Lay down a ‘starter’ hexagon according to your topic and then invite students to add their own one-by-one, explaining the connection(s) as they go.
